A joint research team led by Assistant Professor Ryusei Oketani of Osaka University and Professor Takuya Nakashima of Osaka Metropolitan University has discovered that an achiral crystal of a phenothiazine derivative, which exhibits chirality in the crystalline state, undergoes a single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural transition to transform into a chiral crystal while inverting the molecular chirality. The team also revealed that this structural transition induces circularly polarized luminescence. This finding is expected to serve as a model study for chiral crystallization in the future.
The results of this research were published in the international journal Chemical Science, issued by the Royal Society of Chemistry, on August 19, 2025.
